Re-Thatched explores the characteristics, techniques, and materials of thatching with the aim of integrating this traditional craft into contemporary furniture design. “Kow” (pronounced “Koo”) is a thatched shelf that embodies the preservation and adaptation of heritage in modern life by blending traditional techniques with modern functionality. Inspired by the corners of thatched roofs, it is designed as a centrepiece that offers varied perspectives of surfaces, textures, and shapes of thatch. “Kow” marks the first step in the Re-Thatched project, with ongoing work to create new pieces and share the making practices, materials, and textural palettes.
