The ‘S’ Word prompts KSA’s attempt at being sustainably led on the Graphic Design Course. Consisting of three volumes, each designed solely with the scraps I found around the KSA building, represents how effective the institute is in stimulating a more renewable change within a students practice. They collectively argue from both academia and student perspectives, focusing on the concept of ‘what the course proposes and what we students carry forward.’

For volumes one and two, I held a streaming workshop of pre-recorded talks previously introduced on the course. First one by Paul Micklethwaite  – course leader for MA Sustainable Design here at Kingston and the second on Laura Hunter – Creative Director for Futerra. As intended the streamings bought forward students to open up and share their thoughts on the challenges they face being ethically sustainable, one of them the cost of being sustainable as a student. I then included these voices as indents in-between the spreads and used a calligraphic typeface to contrast them against the ‘academic’ text.

Lastly, the third volume acts as a manifesto for The ’S’ Word. Consisting of a guide to printing sustainably by two BA Graphic Design tutors Zoë Bather and Linda Byrne, printing advice by Paul from Impress Print and my own decisions on designing and printing these volumes.
