In the course of recovery from mental illness, understanding your physical being and your place in the world again is challenging. The feeling of guilt that you have perhaps distanced yourself or hurt others, the embarrassment of looking back at a person you do not recognise. ‘I Turn and Burn’ is an exploration into the physical manifestation of these concealed emotions through the medium of knitwear. Inspired by an excerpt from the poem Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath in which a transformation is described through imagery of burning, ash and flesh. Using this and implementing my own personal experiences I have recreated textures inspired by blisters, grazes and sores on the skin alongside pieces resembling undergarments that partly cover and reveal.
