Hi, I’m Ella (she/her). I’m an illustrator animator using my practice to experiment with digital and analogue processes, and to explore memory, feelings, and physics.

Entanglement is my most recent animation (still in progress), in which I bring all these threads of my practice together. It is inspired by Quantum Entanglement, a strange and weird but real phenomenon in which ‘entangled’ particles appear to communicate instantaneously with one another, even from opposite ends of the universe. It is also an attempt to communicate the feeling of connection we feel for the people we love, even when we are far apart. Through this animation I am trying to use feelings to make sense of physics, and physics to make sense of feelings.

To make Entanglement I spliced and scanned and animated together hundreds of my own photographs and videos. Throughout this process I converted the images from digital, to analogue, and back to digital, playing with the grain and imperfections picked up along the way. The other work featured here continues this combined approach; one project is pastel rotoscoped over film, the other translates a drawing from observation and memory into VR video.
