How do you deal with a creative block? ‘Ways Of…’ is a project that explores the various ways in which people approach creativity. I began my investigation with research into the idea of a manifesto as a way in which a person can declare their aims. Having created my own personal design manifesto, I began to develop work following the aims that were set. A theme of iteration and efficiency began to appear at multiple points. This led to research into Dieter Rams and the idea of ‘less but better’ as well as the creation of work based on function and aesthetics. Using these philosophies, I continued researching efficiency and iteration. Sol LeWitt became a driving force behind much of my research, directing me toward a tangent solely based on cubic iteration and geometry. Having reached the later stages of my project, cubes became a hindrance as they led me away from the idea at the heart of my project: the ways in which people approach creative situations. I began to evaluate how I was feeling and settled on the idea that creative block is a feeling that almost all creatives have experienced. Every person’s way of dealing with this is different, so I had to design a solution that forced interaction to reignite a creative spark that may have been dampened. Bin and Gone is a series of bins that interact in some way with the user based on varying levels of creative block.
