‘SPEAKEAZY’ is a typeface developed from brief set by Monotype Studio, that started with a descriptive paragraph. Without any visuals we were asked to create a typeface using the information in the paragraph that we were given. ‘SPEAKEAZY’ is a Modern Art Deco typeface that ‘looks clean, fresh and modern’.

Alongside the typeface, I crafted an element of branding which ended up becoming a piece of packaging for a cream liqueur brand. The idea behind making it packaging for an alcohol brand was inspired by the art deco type font and speakeasy clubs. Speakeasy clubs were illicit retro establishments around during the prohibition, usually underground and hidden disguised by other legal businesses such as cafes and entertainment venues, the idea of which comes across in the design of the box. The black slipcase that covers the main box acts as a secretive mask for the bright and bold box and the product that would be hidden underneath.

As a designer I currently have an interest in a range of aspects of design, mainly focusing on craft, through print making, book binding and other forms of tactile design. I believe in the beauty of handcrafted objects.
