Only Smarties Have the Answer

For my Final Major Project, we had to solve a problem within the creative industry. I was inspired to help dying brands from my childhood bring back their nostalgia to help appeal to their ageing audiences. This project enabled me to utilise all the skills I have learnt so far whilst on my degree as well as test out many new skills by exploring different workshops within the university. To achieve my project I had to carry out many tests and trials to improve my designs and their functions. To create the characters I had to learn how to character design in Blender and create the digital poster, as well as create 3D prints from my designs, this is where I spent a lot of time in the DMW (Digital Media Workshop) creating my prints including paper and 3D. Once I sanded and painted my models I got to work on the game components such as creating a board and using specialised printer and paper where I created the print for the board. I customised the dice and timer to match the aesthetic of the board game by printing and transferring the different card categories using Acrylic medium on the printed titles. I then had to create the cards which I trialled the most as I had to make sure a large audience could understand the questions, which I then also created in DMW. Overall through this project, I learned so much through my process of trial and error and product testing which enabled me to think more critically when solving problems creatively to ensure that my work was comprehensive to a wide audience and that my advertisement was reaching the appropriate age group to achieve my desired outcome of attracting the attention of Generation Z and make them fall in love with the brand all over again. The interactive element of the board game is something fun and exciting where I was able to recycle an old campaign and bring back the nostalgia of the brand as well as create something fun and interactive that hasn’t been done by a confectionary brand before.

“Meet the brand new Smarties characters; Edie, Nessie, Fin, Ronnie, Billy, Ozzy, Kirby and Shell in ‘Only Smarties Have the Answer’ an interactive board game inspired by an old Smarties campaign. In this game, friends and families test their knowledge to see who has the answer.”
