With my project, ‘A hot mess’, I wanted to redefine “messiness” as a more positive idea diverging from the general negative consensus. Beginning with the Oxford definition of ‘a state of disorderliness and/or confusion’ over the course of the 8 weeks I came up with new definitions that led me down different paths of experimentation and testing. Eventually forming a refined definition, I utilised the metaphor of the studio space as a place where mess is created to visualise my opinion on messiness. For my final outcome I photographed a collection of studio spaces in my local area with a candid photography style. The subjects are of shops ran by small businesses apart from one which depicts my personal studio space. The prints vary in size dependant on specific factors such as which area in the space is subject. All are printed on semi-glossy paper apart from the large print of my space which is printed on premium cartridge paper.
