My work, ‘Fall Sequence’, attempts to bring the Edenic landscape back into a contemporary sphere for re-evaluation , visually conveying the three states of man pre, during, and post fall. My research concerned an array of origin stories involving women from the Enuma Elish and Pandora’s Jar, yet I was drawn back again and again to Genesis as the manifestation of the power of creation narratives to uphold dangerous ideas around gender, as I believe many creation myths unfairly pigeonhole women as the bringers of so called ‘original sin’. I strive to marry narrative painting and text in my work, and doing so here, I provide a feminist reading of the Bible, suggesting that original sin liberated man from ignorance, as opposed to bringing about evil in the world. We can thus see Eve as a hero, and Paradise as a mere illusion.
