‘ WE BUILD OUR OWN HOUSE ‘ is a project about my lived experiences as a woman growing up in a male-dominated society in my home country, Iran, and all the challenges I had to face, to fight for my rights. This battle for me, was about wearing a mask of roughness to hide my delicacy to survive the patriarchal environment. To illustrate this, I drew inspiration from my childhood memories of playing with building materials while my father and grandfather were working on our unfinished houses. The contrast of the harsh environment and me as a delicate child inspired me to explore this duality further, which I expressed through the chioce of fabric, texture and print in my collection.
