In this Final Major Project, my design is a black dress and a set of outer bone armor. My project is inspired by what is Utopia and dystopia. This reminds me of the moment I’m living in, where our era is about to take the next step and AI is the future. The feeling AI has brought to me is contradictory. It can bring huge changes to my life and experience. When life is good, we are secretly controlled by AI, which is much more powerful than us. So I wanted to go deeper into that.
I explored a lot of different dystopian movies, trying to see what different kinds of futures have unique charms. Among them, “the matrix” fascinates me most. It is a movie I grew up with, and I really like the spy atmosphere in it as well as the very advanced special effects and plot at that time. Therefore, my skirt design is influenced to a large extent by the big windbreaker worn by the character in matrix. Self-protection was the emotion I felt most during the preliminary research. I always fantasize about how I would feel if I really went to the future, surrounded by AI and high-tech creations. I’m supposed to be panicked and insecure. So that was my inspiration for the exterior decoration.
