“Over the Rooftop” is a short comic set in New Taipei City, Taiwan (my beloved hometown). In this story, I aimed to challenge myself by creating a narrative that revolves around the themes of parent-child relationships, ghosts, and homesickness.

The story primarily follows a single father who cannot see ghosts and his young daughter, who possesses the ability to see them. The plot takes an interesting turn when a curious neighbor, an outsider, becomes involved and brings forth the daughter’s concerns and reactions regarding her unique ability. Throughout the story, I weave in human responses and perspectives on death, accidents, and grief, culminating in a resolution of understanding and reconciliation.

This comic marks my first attempt at personally crafting an original short piece. While the story may still be considered raw, I have learned much about storytelling through visuals and techniques during this creative process.

As I continue to refine my storytelling abilities, I hope “Over the Rooftop” will serve as a stepping stone toward creating more impactful narratives that resonate with audiences. It is my sincere wish that this comic brings joy, introspection, and a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of human experiences and the intangible connections that bind us all.
